It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Yes, the holidays have come again, at just a slightly faster pace than they did last year. For most, this time of year brings joy and peace as everyone gathers around food laden tables, recounting things to be thankful for, and just passing around gifts.
Yet for others like your neighbors, co-workers, or fellow students, it’s a struggle this time of year either financially or other measures. Parents may have to choose between putting food on the table or having a gift under the tree for their children. Single mothers, deployed spouses, and other families facing separations, the holiday season is a stressful time. They’re unable to focus on what gives them joy and comfort because of fear and uncertainty plaguing their every step.
We want to help.
There are a multitude of charities that center around providing families with gifts, food, and clothing to make the holidays magical. We, student members of Alpha Chi Tau, want to support these charities while maintaining the Sigma Tau Delta mission of facilitating literacy.
This year, we are encouraging our members to give. Give to whichever charity that is in your area, whether it’s Angel Tree , Operation Christmas Child, Toys for Tots, or any other organization/charity. Bring a new children’s book (or seven) and donate it.
A book in the hands of a child is a wonderful thing. C.S. Lewis wrote:
Since it is so likely that children will meet cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage.C.S. Lewis
These children of these families face hardships most adults never have. Let them read of hope. Let them be transported to another life story and dream. Let them escape between the pages of a book to fight and overcome their hardships and daily struggles.
Please join us in this venture! select a book and donate it between December 14 to December 25th. Share with us the book and organization you chose to donate to. Take a picture if you want!
We want to hear why you chose the book and what you hope for the child who reads it to experience!
Join us in spreading literacy and hope this Christmas!
